Therapeutic Areas

Hyperion Therapeutics is committed to developing new treatments to address unmet needs in the areas of hepatology and gastroenterology. The company is currently pursuing clinical trials in two areas:

• urea cycle disorders - an inherited inborn error of metabolism that is fatal in its most severe form if left untreated, and
• hepatic encephalopathy - a serious but potentially reversible neurological disorder that can occur in patients with cirrhosis of any etiology or acute liver failure.

A common theme between these two diseases is an inability of the body to effectively sequester and remove ammonia, a potent neurotoxin, from the body.
